Explainer: Dispute between PVR-INOX and Malayalam film industry over virtual print fee
Early this month, Mollywood was hit by a sudden shock when multiplex giant PVR-INOX pulled out Malayalam films from screens across the country. Though a temporary truce has been reached, the issue may crop up again. TNIE Explainer looks at the stand-off in detail. What is the issue? A dispute over the virtual print fee (VPF) between the leading cinema chain PVR-INOX and the Kerala Film Producers Association over the high VPF hit the headlines when PVR suddenly decided to stop the screening of Malayalam films across the country on Vishu. The abrupt move from PVR not to screen Malayalam films came when Prithviraj-starring 'Aadujeevitham' and survival thriller 'Manjummel Boys' were successfully running in theatres and Fahad Fazil's 'Aavesham', Unni Mukundan-starring 'Jai Ganesh', and Pranav-Dhyan combo's 'Varshangalkku Shesham' were set for release. Sure enough, the Malayalam film industry's revenue was badly hit by the decision. Was there anything further? Yes. This development was followed by the demand to screen Malayalam films at the newly launched nine screens of PVR at Forum Mall Kochi through the content provider Producer's Digital Cinema (PDC), launched by the Film Producers' Association. Manjummel Boys to Aadujeevitham: Malayalam films are hitting it out of the park and how! What is PDC? PDC is a content mastering unit launched as an alternative to content providers like Qube, UFO, PXD, and TSR. PDC is an affordable option for the producers and the distributors as the fee to screen a film is only Rs 5,000 to Rs 6,000. What was PVR's response? PVR CEO Kamal Gianchandani came up with a post on X (previously Twitter) explaining the move. Our newly inaugurated 9-screen cinema, PVR Forum Kochi has been advised by the association to source Malayalam movie content exclusively through one channel, that is through the content mastering and distribution network run by the Association. Such an action of forcing an exhibitor to procure content from only one source is anti-competitive in nature and prohibited under the law. As a law-abiding member of the Indian Film Industry, we are unable to comply with this advice, he said in the post. What is the virtual print fee? Virtual print fee is a subsidy that producers/distributors pay to enable exhibitors to cover the cost of converting their analog projectors into digital ones. The producers in Kerala mostly pay around Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000 per week during the initial days of release to screen their movies, and the amount gradually decreases. There have been allegations that the VPF charged by the theatres are high. What does the Competition Commission say on the issue? Competition Commission of India (CCI) in a market study on the film distribution chain in India in 2022 has found that VPF may lead to several anti-competitive outcomes, namely, limiting the supply of movies, instances of refusals to deals, and creating barriers to entry. Moreover, it is unreasonable to expect producers to bear the cost of equipment for cinemas in perpetuity, in addition to paying for all promotion and production costs for a movie. Additionally, it is unclear to what extent VPF gives smaller theatres a lifeline, as most of the VPF collected in relation to such theatres is taken by the DCE provider, the study said. One of Mollywood's G.O.A.T. directors! Five Blessy gems other than 'The Goat Life' Is this a new issue? No. In the South Indian film industry, VPF has been a discussion point since 2018. The Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce protested against the VPF charged by Digital Service Providers (DSPs) by shutting down theatres in Andhra and Telangana in March 2018. Later, the Tamil Film Producer's Council also announced a protest that lasted more than 40 days, and there were no new releases in Tamil Nadu in March 2020, just after the reopening of theatres after lockdown. The dispute was resolved after several discussions when the content providers agreed to offer a discount of 18 to 23 per cent on VPF. Has the issue been solved? In Kerala, the dispute was temporarily solved after MA Yusuff Ali, the managing director of Lulu Mall, intervened. Lulu Mall in Kochi has 5 PVR screens. The PVR started screening Malayalam films again after two days of the dispute. The screening was stopped on April 11 and after reconciliation, it was resumed on April 14. What could be the final solution? The CCI study has said that VPF paid to multiplexes may be phased out first. VPF for single screens is phased out more gradually, given their dependence on a VPF-driven lease model for digital cinema equipment. Till the VPF sunset is decided and implemented, the DCE providers and the producer may come together and negotiate mutually acceptable VPF charges to ensure that there are no limitations or disruptions in the exhibition of films, in the larger interest of all stakeholders including consumers of cinema, said CCI.

In spirit and in the way the two principal actors perform their parts of two soul mates and singers torn asunder by their allegiance to the same competitive spirit of showmanship, Aashiqui 2is robustly reminiscent of the Kris Kristofferson-Barbra Streisand film where he discovers a co-singer who steals his heart and also his career.Hrishikesh Mukherjee made his lyrical melodiousAbhimaanon the same theme. It was easy for Hrishida to portray Jaya Bhaduri as a better artiste than Amitabh Bachchan quite simply because she sang in Lata Mangeshkars voices. InAashiqui 2,the two protagonists are pretty much left to their own devices to create that unbearable frisson between two people, whose love is trapped in the whirligig of showbiz. For their love to be liberated from the rituals of competitiveness one of the lovers must make a huge sacrifice before the end. Understandably, Mahesh Bhatt is very proud of Aashiqui 2. He said, Its not just a movie; its a legend, not just for its story and music, but for the fresh talent it brought, who still rule Bollywood. Picture this: Aashiqui 1, its timeless tunes echoing through the years. Then boom, Aashiqui 2 bursts onto the scene, introducing us to the wizard behind the camera, director Mohit Suri, and the vocal powerhouse, Arijit Singh. And who can forget Tum Hi Ho by Mithoon? Jeet Ganguly, the unsung hero of the music scene, weaving magic with his tracks. And Ankit Tiwari? His soundtrack Sunn Raha Hai Na Tu mesmerized the world, setting the films emotional tone from the get-go. And writer Shagufta Rafique? Assigned the Hollywood gem A Star Is Born, she gave it an Indian twist that hit home for all of us. Bhushan Kumar? He had a mission: to keep this film and his fathers brand T-Series shining bright, and man, did he deliver on the marketing front! Then comes the duo on-screen: Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor. Aditya, showing us what real acting looks like, and Shraddha, stealing hearts as Aarohi, the Aashiqui girl. They were just amazing! The actor discussed the difficulties he encountered during the famous radio scene in Rajkumar Hirani's critically acclaimed film PK. On the show, Aamir candidly revealed that he was indeed completely naked while filming the scene where his character, PK, runs through the streets after losing his clothes. Director Rajkumar Hirani had assured him of minimal crew on set and special shorts designed for the scene. However, these shorts, which functioned more like an abdominal guard, proved problematic during filming. He recalled, Till the time I was walking, it was okay, but when I had to run, the shorts would come off because it was fixed by tape. I faced a lot of difficulty in that shot. In a recent interview, the director opened up about a nerve-wracking experience during the film's screening sitting next to Chamkila's first wife, Gurmail Kaur. Imtiaz worried about her reaction to the portrayal of Chamkila, known for his powerful music that addressed social issues but also courted controversy due to its themes. These concerns stemmed from the film's inclusion of sensitive and potentially upsetting scenes. In a conversation with Zoom Imtiaz recalled, Chamkilas family was at the screening. His first wife Gurmail Kaur was there. Amarjot and Chamkilas son Jaiman Chamkila was there. Chamkilas daughters were also there. When we were watching the film, his first wife was sitting right next to me and I was thinking that there are some sensitive scenes in the film, should I just pull back or go back before she attacks me? He further added, But when the screening got over, she hugged me, and everybody was so happy with the way that Chamkila was portrayed because we were hoping that they like it. The director also credited the family for their trust in his creative vision. I have not whitewashed Chamkila because that was the point of making the film. He has done a lot of things that can be judged but I let it be like that in the film and its actually credit to the family that they understood it. They knew that its factual and they did not stop me in any way, he concluded. Amar Singh Chamkila dominated the Punjabi music scene from 1979 to 1988. The surroundings were beautiful, the actors and characters and faces were lovely, it had so much flavour. Given a choice, I would stay in that world for ever, but then real-life crept in. Exactly like it did for Ani and Kavya. In our heads there was a separate movie in Ooty with Kavya and Ani's college romance and running away and the scandal in the Ganeshan household. We just didnt show that to you. The spoken lines by all the four protagonists are the best we have heard in years. Where did these wonderful words come from?All that is Suprotim, Eisha and Amrita Bagchi. The writers. Given that we wanted to make a very lived-in, real love story, they had the difficult job of writing dialogues that sounded real and every day and yet keep it engaging. Sometimes the simplest things can sound so beautiful or funny. Like my favourite line is, Kabhi Kabhi shayad pyaar kaafi nahin hota. Its such a simple thought but it's so layered, and it is the heart of our film. It goes against everything our films generally tell us: that its all about falling in love and once you are in love, its absolute and forever. It is not. Shirsha confessed that she has always been interested in what happens to all those perfectly in love couples that we show in our films. What happened to Raj and Simran after running away on the train at the end of DDLJ twenty years later? Where are they now? Have they become flatmates instead of lovers? What happens when the initial chemistry has worn off and love becomes a habit. This has always fascinated me. I see people around me struggling with this in our modern lives - To hold on to this Hallmark version of love, with so many distractions, with social media. Real Love is not a straight line - its cyclical. It comes and goes. The songs and books all lied. So, when my producers Swati Iyer and Tanuj Garg brought this story to me, an adaptation of an independent American film called The Lovers by Azazel Jacobs, I jumped at the opportunity of telling a story of love which was lived in and more real. She added, This was in 2020 just before COVID hit its taken four years to finally bring this story to you. I liked the one liner of the original film. But the movie itself was offbeat and culturally very different. The writers, Suprotim Sengupta and Eisha Chopra did a fantastic job of making the structural changes. I loved their idea of taking my protagonists Ani and Kavya back to her hometown to rekindle their chemistry. I specially loved the idea of them disrupting a funeral and not say a wedding which is the traditional Bollywood choice it seemed more fun and fresh. They made the characters much more nuanced and fun and relatable for our audiences than the original. The casting, agreed Shirsha, was magical. I got lucky, she said. Vidya was absolutely the first choice. She brings a vulnerability and beauty and warmth to the role that no one else could have. You can't take your eyes off her. There is no lie in her fire. I don't think this film would happen without her. Pratik Gandhi is an absolute surprise and delight. He plays the Bengali nerd with such affection. Tell me about his casting? We knew we had to cast someone who could hold his own against the acting powerhouse that Vidya is. Also, Anis character would do things, which audiences might construe as wrong. Ani shouldn't come across as someone smug and revelling in the cheating and adultery but actually be confused and messed up. And Pratik nails that. Their dance together. Bin tere sanam mar mitenge hum will never be the same again Its such a fun catchy song. It was Suprotims idea to use that song. He made us watch the original video in which the hero heroine do strange dance moves in front of some thin malnourished cows. The producers and I knew straightaway we wanted those dance moves in our film. And Vidya and Pratik killed it! she said. Shirsha felt Sendhil Ramamurthy and Ileana DCruz also fitted the bill perfectly. We knew we couldn't give them too much screen time. So, they had to really stand out. Ani and Kavya were looking for things in Sendhil and Ileana that they couldn't find in each other anymore. We always thought of the four characters together as an ensemble. They complemented each other. Kavya was vivacious and larger than life. Ani was sincere and laidback. Nora was neurotic and needy. Vikram was independent and very hot. And most importantly - they had the same quality that Vidya and Pratik have - they look and feel relatable and likeable. And we feel for their story arcs as well, which was very important for the movie to work. They should seem credible threats to the marriage.
